CLIPSE HATH NO FURY
September 25

I used to be huge into the Neptunes. All while pumping out jams for Luda, Jay-Z, CNN, and Snoop, they brought their own artists like Slim Thug and The Clipse. When the first Clipse record came out i listened to it on repeat.

Due to issues with their label Jive, the next album Hell Hath No Fury, has been delayed for years. Now it’s coming out. I even got to meet the guys at last month’s MTV Video Music Awards and they talked about how excited they are to get the record out.

But that’s not what prompted me to post. Over at Stereogum, i caught this quote from the Clipse about their label:

“I hate Jive. I hate them motherfuckers. With all my heart and all the passion and my soul I hate these bitches. It’s about the lynching of every staff member up in this motherfucker. … You could ask anyone in here to give you a marketing plan on Clipse and they could never do it. It’s like damn, ‘What do you understand about hip-hop? You ain’t had nobody since Spice 1! You don’t know the fucking formula. Everybody in here’s like 50 years old! Just drop us. Leave us the fuck alone so we can go where there’s plenty of people like Clipse.”

oof!

Canadian Idol, Eva Avila & Loft party photos
September 19

This past weekend was all about Idol and DJing. I was lucky enough to be in attendance at Sunday’s finale of Canadian Idol. As someone who never watches Idol it was very outside-looking-in, and in the end I found it very interesting.

Winner Eva Avila impressed me, I think she has a very real shot at making good in music. We haven’t heard much from our former Idols, maybe she can be Canada’s Kelly Clarkson and actually have a career.

The whole show was a lot more heartfelt (human?) than the American counterpart, and I got to see Nelly Furtado do a song live. Also, being able to attend the wrap party for Canada’s biggest tv show was pretty interesting too.

Earlier in the weekend some friends and I DJed as a group of four; usually I just work with my friend Gabe. DJing as 4 is quite similar to DJing as 1 or 2, but you have more hands to take care of important elements like arm-pumping and strobe-control. Lots of pics after the jump. (more…)

PHOTOS: ONEXONE Charity event red carpet
September 13

This past sunday we were at the ONE X ONE charity event, an event to raise funds for children suffering from poverty around the world. We saw and talked to Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, John Legend, Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk, and more. We were actually at the event shooting other things when we were notified we were going to cover the red carpet. This was my second red carpet ever, second in as many weeks, and i was excited to meet some of the stars.

The highlight for me was hearing what Matt Damon had to say, because he doesn’t talk about raising money for corporate charities. He stands for real solutions that can help real people in real ways, now. He was a very passionate speaker about it, and I gained much respect for him from our meeting. Photos after the jump…

PHOTOS: Uffie and Ed Banger Crew
September 11

Some of my favorite music this year has come from Ed Banger Records, a new go-to for french house. I love them for artists like Justice, SebastiAn, and their consistently hot releases. Busy P aka Pedro Winter runs the label (before Ed Banger he was best known as Daft Punk’s manager). But their secret weapon is Uffie, a dirty rappin 18 year old phenom from Miami. Her songs have been showing up on indie kids’ myspace profiles since they came out, profiles of kids who never knew they liked house music. Listen up:

PHOTOS: MTV Video Music Awards part three - THURSDAY, THE BIG DAY
September 7

This was our thursday, the big day of the show. We were going to rock the red carpet Overdrive style. Red carpet is a short little happening before a big show, but for the people walking it and the people like us covering it, it’s a whole day of events.
