Good First Compression

With every slice of MySpace electro she’s put out so far, Uffie has been smooshing genres and attitudes together. With the title track to her forthcoming album, “First Love,” she takes this further. It may seem dubious that First Love’s 80s teen romantic could be the same artist that said “I got my man, my sound, my glass, and I’m ready to f***”, but Uffie is eighteen, and it’s not a stretch to imagine both realities being true.
There’s something particular about the best Parisian dance music that can be attributed to an old $100 piece of music equipment called a compressor. The effect is used heavily by Cassius, but it was Daft Punk who made the sound famous trying to capture the sound of FM radio. “Sometimes you like it so much that you’re really disappointed when you buy the CD.”
The french touch’s use of filters may be the sound Paris is best known for, but long after people got tired of filters, the compressor lives on.
I’m bugging out about these things because I bought one and it just arrived:
Picked up a new magazine yesterday, and did a serious DOUBLE TAKE. The new YSL ads feature Vincent Gallo.
